Cut-outs and laces were used to decorate tops, trousers and outerwear, while dresses featured straps and perforations that created a subtle yet sensual effect. The wearer's body is highlighted and in turn becomes an essential component of the design itself. S/S 2001 can thus be understood as a quintessential Helmut Lang collection, combining his cerebral conceptualism with a new sense of raw-yet-refined sexiness."

It may seem unintuitive to refer to a pair of simple briefs when showcasing Helmut Lang's attention to avant-garde detail, yet the simplicity of the item only further highlights just how amazing the execution was. The edges are finished with a stitch composed of the fabric itself leading to an extremely elegant and smooth transition. The entire fabric of the garment is not cut and sewn, but rather delicately knit in a completely anatomic pattern as shown by the subtle changes in the grain of the fabric.
